The Kimpton Cardinal Hotel

This weekend, we did something we've never done before. We've both worked long hours the past few weeks and needed some time to relax, so I booked us a night at the Kimpton Cardinal Hotel in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. We've gotten lots of questions about our stay and the hotel, so I'm going to do my best to answer all of them.

The Kimpton Cardinal is housed in the historic R.J. Reynolds building in downtown Winston-Salem. The location is absolutely perfect. You can walk to any of the downtown bars or restaurants, Bailey Park, and are only a short drive away from Wake Forest University and the Reynolda House. The hotel even has complimentary bikes you can use to get around town. We loved this unique touch. Winston-Salem is an underrated destination in our opinion, we've written a post on how to spend a weekend here.

We booked a King Spa room because I really wanted a bathtub. The standard rooms only have a shower. I found the rooms to be average for an upmarket hotel. There were several nice touches like a snack drawer, a yoga mat, and amazing bathrobes. The standard and King Spa rooms come with a wardrobe, desk, flatscreen TV, chair and bathroom. Although the bathroom was awesome, it was small. If you find a good deal, I recommend booking a suite for the extra room. I'll share more about finding a good deal in the value section below.

The hotel has a French restaurant called The Katharine. It has a beautiful ambiance and the bar is amazing. We opted for room service during our stay as a special treat because we go to The Katharine fairly frequently. Several of you asked about it, and overall, we like it. It's a bit pricey for Winston-Salem and I've definitely had things that I love and things that I wouldn't order again. I crave their truffle fries and they have an amazing wine list and fun cocktails. I also really like the lobster and potato gnocchi and this time we tried the fried Brussel sprouts with curry aioli, which did not disappoint.

I probably wouldn't order the cheese board again. Despite having some lovely cheeses, I thought it was small for the price. Sam really liked the tagliatelle bolognese, but I wasn't a huge fan. The burger is a crowd favorite. If you come here expecting to spend more than you normally would in Winston, but less than a nice dinner in D.C. or New York, you'll probably leave very satisfied.

Other hotel amenities

The Kimpton Cardinal doesn't have a pool, but it does have an awesome recreation room with a slide, bowling, a half court basketball court, pool table, ping pong, shuffle board and more. We had a blast with all of the games. The building also has a community room and nice gym. There's also a complimentary happy hour in the lobby every night for guests.

Pet fee

None:) The Kimpton is very dog friendly. The staff greeted our dog Ella with lots of love and treats.

Do you think it was a good value for the money? I got this question multiple times during our stay. If you can wait until the last minute to book, that's what I recommend. We got a great deal. I saw rates on the standard King rooms go as low as $111 per night. I would struggle to pay full price for the rooms, but at less than $150 per night and no pet fee, I thought it was a great value. I've definitely paid more for less!

Final Verdict

We recommend the Kimpton for a relaxing getaway, especially if you find a great deal. The location is awesome, the atmosphere is chic and if traveling with dogs, I think it'd be hard to find a better hotel for the price.
