Sigiriya

Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa

  • Anuradhapura

Sri Maha Bodhi: This is the oldest living human-planted tree in the world and is considered to be sacred by Buddhists. It is believed that the tree was brought to Anuradhapura in the 3rd century BC by Sanghamitta, the daughter of Emperor Ashoka of India.

 

Ruwanwelisaya: This is the largest stupa in Sri Lanka and is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the country. It was built in the 3rd century BC by King Dutugemunu and is said to house a relic of the Buddha.

 

Jetavanaramaya: This was once the largest stupa in the world and is still one of the most impressive ruins in Anuradhapura. It was built in the 3rd century BC by King Mahasena and is said to have housed over 90,000 monks.

 

Thuparamaya: This is the oldest stupa in Anuradhapura and is said to house a relic of the Buddha's hair. It was built in the 3rd century BC by King Devanampiya Tissa and is considered to be the model for all other stupas in Sri Lanka.

 

Isurumuniya: This is a rock temple that is famous for its well-preserved stone carvings, including a carving of a couple known as the "Isurumuniya Lovers." The temple was built in the 7th century AD and is dedicated to the Buddha.

 

Mihintale: This is a hilltop monastery that is located about 15 kilometers from Anuradhapura. It is said that the Buddha's first sermon in Sri Lanka was given at Mihintale and the site is now a popular pilgrimage destination.

 

 

  •  Polonnaruwa

 

Gal Vihara: This is a complex of three giant Buddha statues carved out of a single granite rock. The largest statue is 40 feet tall and depicts the Buddha in the seated position.

 

Royal Palace: This was the residence of the kings of Polonnaruwa. The palace complex is spread over a large area and includes a number of buildings, such as the Audience Hall, the Council Chamber, and the Queen's Bath.

 

Rankot Vihara: This is the largest stupa in Polonnaruwa. It is 125 feet tall and has a diameter of 300 feet. The stupa is said to contain the relics of the Buddha.

 

Lankatilaka: This is a Buddhist temple that is famous for its beautiful frescoes. The temple is dedicated to the Buddha and contains a number of statues of the Buddha in different poses.

 

Parakrama Samudra: This is a large reservoir that was built by King Parakramabahu the Great. The reservoir is 11 miles long and 6 miles wide and is one of the largest reservoirs in Sri Lanka.

 

Trincomalee

 

Koneswaram Temple: This is one of the most important Hindu temples in Sri Lanka. It is dedicated to the god Shiva and is said to have been built in the 7th century. The temple is located on Swami Rock, which offers stunning views of the surrounding area.
